So you've got your first 3D printer - exciting times! But if your early prints are coming out stringy, warped, or just plain wrong, don't panic. Every maker goes through it. The good news? A handful of simple habits will take you from frustrating failures to satisfying prints in no time.
Here are the best practices every beginner should know.
1. Level Your Bed (Every Single Time)
This is the number one cause of failed prints, and it's also the easiest fix. A properly leveled print bed ensures your first layer sticks evenly - and that first layer is everything. It's the foundation your entire print is built on.
Most printers have a manual leveling process using adjustment knobs at each corner. Take five minutes before each print to check it. Many newer printers also offer auto-leveling - if yours has it, use it.
Quick tip: Run your nozzle close enough that a piece of paper slides underneath with just a little resistance. That's your sweet spot.
2. Dial In Your Print Settings
Out-of-the-box settings are a starting point, not a finish line. Two settings make the biggest difference for beginners:
Print temperature - Too hot and you get blobbing or stringing. Too cool and layers won't stick together. For PLA (the most beginner-friendly filament), start around 200°C and adjust from there.
Print speed - Slower is almost always better when you're learning. 40-50mm/s is a safe, reliable range.
Your slicer software (like Cura or PrusaSlicer) is where you'll tweak these settings before sending a file to your printer. Don't be afraid to experiment - that's literally how you learn.
3. Store Your Filament Properly
Filament absorbs moisture from the air, and wet filament prints terribly - you'll hear popping sounds and see rough, bubbly surfaces. Keep your spools in sealed bags or airtight containers with silica gel packets when you're not using them.
This is one of those things most beginners skip... until they ruin a spool. Don't be that person.
4. Don't Skip Supports and Adhesion Helpers
If your model has overhangs (parts that jut out at steep angles), you'll need support structures - temporary scaffolding your slicer generates automatically. Without them, those sections will droop or collapse mid-print.
Also, if prints keep peeling off your bed, try:
A light coat of glue stick on the print surface
Painter's tape for a better grip
A brim (a flat ring around the base of your print) added in your slicer
5. Start Simple, Then Level Up
It's tempting to jump straight to complex models, but starting with simpler prints builds your understanding of how settings affect results. Print a calibration cube first - it's the classic beginner test and will tell you a lot about your printer's accuracy.
Once that's looking clean, you're ready to tackle anything.
